The Madison girls? varsity eight turned in a surprising performance at the USRowing Youth National Championships on Sunday. In a field comprised primarily of elite club teams from across the country, the Warhawks finished second, crossing the 2,000-meter course on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 6 minutes 50.85 seconds. Madison finished just over two seconds behind Marin, a club team and regional power out of California.
?My expectations were nowhere near as high as this,? Coach Paul Allbright said. ?I could see the confidence growing, but to get second was amazing... Once I saw how they were rowing, I had a good feeling, but to see them beat Connecticut [the defending champion] and get second, I couldn?t be prouder.?
