Indian music finds its niche in Washington area with intimate house concerts

It?s the last weekend in May, and about 50 people have gathered at Soumya and Michelle Chakraverty?s Silver Spring home. Built in 1998, the house is much larger than its mid-20th-century neighbors, yet its architectural details are traditionally American. So is a Memorial Day get-together, but the couple?s guests don?t head to the back yard for hot dogs and coleslaw.

Instead, they remove their shoes, make a monetary donation and pad toward a large room at the back of the aboveground basement, where red cloths have been spread over a deeper red carpet. The visitors are met by a papier-mache statue of Nataraj, the dancing avatar of Shiva ? made by Michelle Chakraverty ? and a few musicians who are preparing to perform Hindustani classical music.
